Why We Started

It started from a gap

"We believe in our child's growth, but we worry too. Because we are parents."

MapMastery started simply. It began with the MAP Growth test — taken by children attending international schools with American curricula, or schools in the United States.

I understood that NWEA's MAP Growth is a good assessment system. It measures how much a child has grown, and recognizes that growth follows a curve. Even so, it couldn't answer the question: what should we do now?

Our children are already in a lot of tutoring. I don't want more tutoring just to get better test scores. I had no idea how to guide the learning my child receives in and outside of school — the teachers at the American school always just said they were doing great.

I'm a parent who grew up in a competitive Asian education system. Watching my child receive a completely different kind of education, I sometimes wonder what we're paying for. And yet seeing them happy, I feel quietly anxious. I don't want to add expensive tutoring like everyone else. I want to give them direction without taking away their autonomy — but I'm not sure how, in an education environment so different from my own.
